Triplefire Music resident Helmut J and founder Ryan Sullivan come together to display their love for dub techno on The Black Series. The two artists regularly showcase this sound when they dj back to back and Helmut J’s personally curated Thrum Room podcast series is a highly respected brand, upholding the genre in Southern Africa.
Distant Communication is a studio project taken on without meeting in person but rather developing ideas separately via the internet. It’s a strange approach for two artists and close friends living in the same city which is the point according to Ryan Sullivan who says “we wanted to see what we could come up with while collaborating but working apart. It allowed us to experiment and play with sounds we otherwise may not have due to the fact that in person we would have influenced each others decisions in a different way. This allowed us to basically remix each others ideas throughout the entire project and we’re real excited about the outcome.”
DCOM comes in two parts along with an additional remix from Helmut J.
“This is the third in the experimental series of releases which explore the dark and unusual side of the African imprint’s artists.
The Black Series Three sees Helmut J, one of Cape Town’s most active techno artists, displaying a piece of his early work. Helmut J originally produced Geist over five years back and when rediscovered on a dusty old hard-drive, had to be brought to life on Triplefire Music’s Black Series.”

#TBT to my first release on Triplefire Music – 1 February 2012 – now up on YouTube.
“After teasing our ears with his dj sets and studio productions for a number of years, Helmut J signs his first two records with Triplefire Music. First up is Flexion. We’ve had our eyes and ears on this forward thinking, South African artist for a very long time now and are proud to be able to present his music to the world. Flexion begins with an intruiging and dreamy pad. The rhythm slowly builds as large stabbing synth sounds maintain one’s focus. Once in full swing, a short break-down with containing some spoken voice leads into an early peak. Once back in the groove, the lead melody begins in body of the track , pulsating in a modern techno fashion before opening up into it’s trance inducing melody before the song gently works it’s way to an end.”
